My CommitmentThis project has kept me awake for countless hours into getting ready for this event. In the beginning, I was worried as to what our event would initially be. I tried to get in contact with the Director of the Peninsula SPCA and I received no response. Then I tried getting in contact with the front desk over the phone and only ever had the ability to record a voicemail. It seemed that all hope was lost. During the interview portion of the project, I finally decided it was time to just walk in and speak to a human rather than trying to get through to someone on the phone or by email. This was the most successful attempt yet. After I interviewed the Animal Care Coordinator, I walked back to the front desk to talk about possibilities of them being present in some way at our event. The answer was no. They were too busy with Furball and the Easter Egg Hunt they were planning. Unfortunately, it was back to the drawing board for ideas.
Finally, after a well-needed group meeting with Professor Howell, we figured out what our event was going to be. After the meeting, we had great ideas on how to execute the event. I made a large poster which hung on the tree by Forbes Hall. I also created smaller posters that each of us posted all over the Residence Halls on campus. Animal cruelty is a topic I am very passionate about. I have volunteered at the Peninsula SPCA since arriving here at CNU. At the shelter, I have seen terribly abused animals as well as animals suffering from car accidents and it is very upsetting. |
StephanieI am a Freshman and I am heavily involved in my sorority, Nu Kappa Epsilon. I came to CNU because I was interested in the small class size as well as the beautiful campus. I am a Communication Studies Major with a Childhood Studies Minor. I hope to continue my college career at CNU to obtain a Master's in Teaching for Elementary Education. I am an animal lover and own two shelter kittens which happened to easily translate into this project about animal cruelty.
My ResearchMy research portion of this project has been centered around companion animals. I have examined the pet overpopulation problem, dog fighting, as well as other forms of domestic animal abuse. Finding a scholarly article to base part of my research off of was one of the simpler tasks in the making of this project. Simply going through different journal databases to find other articles was one of the easier things I did for this project. One thing I learned was that pet overpopulation has been a problem for hundreds of years. Since 1895, the euthanasia rate in the United States has drastically decreased but the number of homeless animals continues to rise. One of the simplest ways to reduce this problem is by spaying and neutering dogs and cats. Another significant finding relating to dog fighting is that this terrible fighting happens in many countries all over the world and many times these fights are overlooked.
