My CommitmentAnimal cruelty has always been a topic of great interest to me. I was pleased when I was assigned to a group with this topic, with two others who were equally interested in helping. It was easy to pick a specific topic to focus in on, farm animal welfare. Factory farming came to my attention my junior year of high school. In one class, we watched Food, Inc., which showed many large brands and factory farms being shut down by documentaries revealing their routine cruelty to the animals they housed. Additional footage, however, showed family farms that Chipotle bought from that considered the natural practices of animals and raised them freely. I thought that these practices, though unusual, should be considered more and legislation should be put in place to protect all farm animals from the cruelty they so often have to endure.
I volunteer at a cat shelter in Hampton, VA every Wednesday morning. It brings me so much joy to help out the cats, and see them getting adopted and cared for properly. When we had to decide on an organization to support and do an awareness event for, however, we decided on a more overreaching group, the SPCA. We held a donation drive, which you can find out more about under our awareness event tab. My research paper is specifically on factory farming and farm animal welfare. I feel that it is so important for consumers to be aware of how their products are being treated before death. I also believe that if the animals were treated humanely, consumers would be willing to pay a few dollars more to ensure that adequate housing and feeding are available, thus putting an end to factory farming. |
MauraI am a freshman here at Christopher Newport. I hope to be a business marketing major, and am working towards a double minor in leadership and communications. After college, I hope to be able to work in sports or music marketing. I have always loved animals, but due to my parents allergies, I have been unable to own anything other than a fish. I hope to get a dog or cat as soon as possible!
My ResearchMy research for this project is on factory farming and the humane treatment of farm animals. Many people have written articles on the fair treatment of animals, so research for this project was not difficult. The hardest part was getting in touch with a representative from a non-profit organization to conduct an interview. My favorite part of the research was seeing peoples answers to our survey questions, as well as analyzing the information further to see a clear breakdown of responses. Helping out these animals is as simple as avoiding buying brands in the grocery store that utilize factory farming or avoiding restaurants supplied by these brands.
